A story of empowerment and the choices we make, for better or worse.

When ageing feminist and borderline hoarder, Nora gets a final opportunity to reconnect with her estranged son, she hires personal organizer and struggling actress Anne to whip her apartment into shape for his visit. But letting go of the past to make space for the present isn’t always straightforward.

*We are inviting audiences to be a part of new play development by opening up our Workshop Performances to both in-person and online audiences and asking for your feedback and support as this play moves towards towards its goal of professional production.

A "Workshop Performance" is a fully staged piece of theater, where talented actors bring to life a script that has been evolving over an intense period of development.  The performance will be staged in a modest form which does not include all of the production elements which may be included in a fully realized production (for example: sets, lighting, and costumes will be included in a simplified form, and actors may be working with script changes that have just been created).  A workshop performance gives audiences a chance to see a play in the process of creation, and invokes the magic of live performance to create the full impact of a new story being told for the first time.

Our workshops will be available both online, and for limited in-person audiences.

What Kind of Woman (formally titled Committed Citizen) began development in 2016 when real life actress and personal organizer, Abbe Tanenbaum was working with a client in New York City. While organizing paperwork, they uncovered twenty letters from women seeking abortions in the 1970’s. These original letters are the inspiration for this play.

Over the following years Abbe has written and rewritten the play more times than she can count, gathering a steady tribe of supporters along the way. The first exploration took place at PACA in Erie, PA followed by a reading with B-Side Salon Series in NYC. It’s been part of Somehow 9am Productions development program since 2020 and has been awarded an Abortion Conversation Projects grant for it’s international workshop. What Kind of Woman was most notably featured in Culture Night Belfast 2020 on behalf of Alliance for Choice.

As Tanenbaum’s inaugural play continues to gain momentum, it is thrilling to move into the next stage of development with American Theatre Northwest.

What Kind of Woman is aiming for a US and international premier soon, followed by successful region productions for years to come.
